Description:
NAMI of Fairbanks, Alaska is located in the basement of the Arctic Bowl building at 946 Cowles Street # 102. The office is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 11am - 4 pm. The NAMI office phone number is 456 - 4704 and the fax number is 456 - 3595 and send e-mails to fami@consumersconsortium.org At the office we have General Support Meetings the first Thursday of every month from 7-9 pm. There is a lending library of books /videos relating to mental health issues that can be borrowed for a month at a time. Many NAMI pamphlets and papers are on display at the office for people to take with them. Volunteers print the NAMI Newsletter alternating months, writing about issues that concern mental health such as advocacy, support and education. NAMI of Fairbanks held its first Crisis Intervention Training for police officers from Fairbanks and the UofA Fairbanks on June 5- 9th, 2006. The first consumers WRAP Class shall take place on October 9-13th, 2006. We have 2 people trained by NAMI to lead the 12 week Family to Family class. NAMI is preparing for October, the Mental Illness Awareness Month with a Candlelight Vigil on Oct. 1st and educational displays or posters around the Fairbanks area. You may schedule the trained speaker for an In Our Own Voice presentation. Requests can also be made for speakers or a panel discussion, for any group or gathering in Fairbanks, on Mental Illness / Health issues. NAMI of Fairbanks has two scholarships at the University of Fairbanks or the Tanana Valley Campus. First preference is given to full or part time undergraduate or graduate students, in any field of study, who have been treated for a serious mental illness. Second preference is given to other students in any field of study who are interested in education, advocacy and removal of stigma regarding mental illness; in particular those majoring in counseling, psychology, social work or similar fields who intend to serve the mentally ill.
